Technical & Applied Science

Technical & Applied Science (TAS) covers a range of subjects such as food technology and industrial technology timber. Students are introduced to TAS in years seven and eight after which it becomes an elective.

Students are introduced to TAS in year 7 and 8 in Technology Mandatory.  Students complete term blocks in Timber, Food Technology, IT and Agriculture.

Students design and construct C02 Dragsters with a focus being on the design process. After an introduction to workshop safety the students are inducted into the use of a range of workshop tools. The students then build a timber box to house the dragster and then using a design brief, research suitable designs and construct their project. Once complete the dragsters are raced on a purpose built track where they reach speeds of up to 100km per hour!

Industrial Technology Timber Years 9 & 10

Industrial Technology Timber encompasses students understanding of safety in the workshop, industrial processes and a range of practical projects such as a carpenter's toolbox, turned mallet, mantle clock (year 9) and a cheval mirror and a student's choice of project (year 10).

Food Technology

Food Technology provides opportunities for students to develop:

  • Knowledge and understanding about food systems in the production, processing and consumption of food and an appreciation of their impact on society.
  • Knowledge and understanding about the nature of food and human nutrition and an appreciation of the importance of food to health.
  • Skills in researching, analysing and communicating food issues.
  • Skills in experimenting with and preparing food by applying theoretical concepts.
  • Skills in designing, implementing and evaluating solutions to food situations.


Information Technology

The Technology (Mandatory) Years 7-8 course enables students to develop a way of thinking and doing to create quality solutions to everyday problems, opportunities and needs. Students work through a design process to develop and realise ideas, manage resources and processes, and evaluate technology and design including social and environmental consequences.

In the Technology (Mandatory) Years 7-8 syllabus students undertake 4-8 design projects during the course. Design-related content is the basis of a student's progression of learning through the course and must be addressed in each design project. To ensure a breadth of technological experience students use at least six different technologies by the end of the course to develop design projects.





Agriculture allows students to develop knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles of agriculture. It is designed to increase student understanding and abilities in the use of technologies associated with agricultural enterprises.

Students develop research and design skills. They also learn to collect and organise information, work in a team, plan and organise activities, manage small enterprises, market products, solve problems, innovate, carry out scientific experiments and communicate to a variety of audiences.

Students should be able to make ethical decisions and responsible judgements on the use of agricultural technologies and the basic resources of soil, air and water, to ensure a sustainable future.
